Are Iodine Supplements Advisable Post Thyroidectomy?

No you cannot. After suffering from low thyroid for over 15 years which my doctor never caught despite annual thyroid tests I researched it on my own. I might also add I was taking levothyroxine the entire time after having a thyroidectomy. Not once did a doctor even inform me that a thyroid panel existed much less suggest one in spite of my constant reporting of low thyroid symptoms. I am currently off the levothyroxine after beginning iodine supplements. My question is for Dr. Shehzad Topiwala is WHY DO YOU HOLD YOURSELF UP TO THE WORLD AS AN EXPERT ON THE SUBJECT AND LIE TO PEOPLE WHILE YOU CHARGE THEM TO DO SO? Medicine needs a good kick in the rear to insert some ethics in to it. Have a better day tomorrow.

Hello,

If a person has undergone thyroidectomy (removal of thyroid gland) then that person needs to be on Levothyroxine for life time. Taking Iodine supplements has absolutely no benefits when the thyroid gland is not there. Because iodine is taken up by thyroid gland cells to synthesize Thyroxine (T4). Please do check tour thyroid hormone levels also TSH that will give an idea about the requirement. If you have any questions please do come back.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
