General & Family Physician 's  Response
hello,
i can understand your concern.
all drugs come with there share of side effects.
the benefits should be taken into consideration against the risk of the drugs used.
the benefits outweigh the side effects in your husbands case.
the doctor has rightly prescribed the drugs used for alcohol withdrawal.
dosage of librium might have to be increased if necessary.10mg wouldnt be sufficient to prevent the withdrawal symptoms.
pantocid and thiamine wouldnt have much of side effects.
the most common side effects your husband would get are dizziness, sedation, rash, weakness, nausea, dry mouth, decreased libido on longer usage.
the harmful effects of chronic alcoholism are much higher than these side effects, i would suggest you to continue the medications as advised.
have regular follow ups, counselling sessions with a psychiatrist would be of immense help.
be patient , follow the instructions, your husband would surely then leave the alcoholism.
hope i have answered your queries.
feel free to ask further queries.
thanks for choosing HCM
