Are Maxtra Drops And Ambrodil-S Syrup Right Medication For Cold In An Infant?
Hello, my child is 4 months and 22 days old and has caught cold for the second time. Last month when my child was suffering from cough and cold the pediatrician prescribed maxtra drops ( 6 drops to be taken after 6 hours) saltol kid 1ml thrice and clavam drops. This time my child got a blocked nose and slight cough...as suggested by the pediatrician i m giving maxtra drops with similar dosage and also gave him ambrodil s 1ml to provide him relief along with nazodrop...i wanted to inquire whether i m doing right or should i give my child saltol kid instead of ambrodil s... Looking forward to,your reply... Thank you
Decongestants and antihistamines (in Maxtra) are not beneficial and sometimes harmful for common cold in children less than 4 years of age. First year of the child is the year of common colds and stomach upsets. Use symptomatic medications like 1) Acetaminophen 15mg/kg three times daily 2) Saline nose drops and suction bulb for nasal congestion 3) Cool mist humidifier to increase moisture in the room 4) Vaseline jelly under the nose to soothe rawness 5) Steam, warm and moist environment. Common cold usually lasts from 4 to 7 days and infants tolerate well. Consult pediatrician to rule out streptococcal sore throat or in case of coughing lot of mucus, high grade fever (>102 degree F), earache, shortness of breath and/or poor oral intake. Mucolytics and Bronchodilators (Ambrodil-S) can be given to small children who are diagnosed having allergic bronchitis but not for common cold. It should be given under the supervision of a pediatrician and never be self prescribed. Yearly vaccination with influenza vaccine also decreases the frequency and intensity of common cold in young children.
