Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Are Prolia And Forteo Effective In The Treatment Of Osteoporosis?
I have osteoporosis and I have also had a parathyroidectomy. Just one parathryroid gland was removed. My doctor has encouraged me to choose drug treatment to address the osteoporosis. I was once on Fosamax for seven years. That was about 10 years ago. The other two drugs my doctor mentioned are Prolia and Forteo. I am concerned about the side effects of these and the fact that these drugs are only approved for two years of treatment. Can you give me any more up-to-date information on success of these drug treatments?
Prolia is the first approved therapy that specifically targets RANK Ligand, an essential regulator of osteoclasts (the cells that break down bone).
FORTEO is indicated for the treatment of postmenopausal women with osteoporosis at high risk for fracture, defined as a history of osteoporotic fracture, multiple risk factors for fracture, or patients who have failed or are intolerant to other available osteoporosis therapy. In postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, FORTEO reduces the risk of vertebral and nonvertebral fractures.
