Are Propylthiouracil And Metoprolol Advisable For Graves Disease And Hyperthyroidism?

Based upon a routine blood draw, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism with symptomology more related to hypothyroidism. The first endocrinologist prescribed Methimazole. I suffered with bathroom problems for a year with this (difficult and painful). After a year, consultation with my primary medical office terminated this and a different endocrinologist was consulted. Reluctantly, he prescribed Propylthiouracil and Metropol. (I say reluctantly because he also wanted me on Methimazole and I informed him I would not take it.) Based upon blood work, he says they are working, but it may take months for success. Just deal with the side effects of ankle and knee pain, feeling of unease, NO libido, etc. Take Tylenol. And at all costs, continue the medication. Well, I was feeling fine until these doctors got a hold of me. During all of this, my regular physician moved and the nurse practitioner I had seen the last couple of times has also left. I have contacted a receptionist at the practice and have heard nothing. Please advise. Do I continue along this path with the medication decreasing my quality of life or do I try doctor #3. Right now, I am scared. I want to fix something if it is wrong, but I want to live. The second doctor also told me I had Graves Disease (without any further testing). It is my understanding that Graves does cause hyperthyroidism, but so do other factors.

Hi,

My advice to you is to continue your medication as long as your thyroid is functioning well, as confirmed by lab works. If not, consult a third doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Salah Saad Shoman, Internal Medicine Specialist
