Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. Your symptoms are quite common during depo shots. Nothing to worry. Both birth control pills and the Depo-Provera shot are very safe for most women to use.

As with any medicine, they can still cause unwanted side effects. For birth control shots, side effects can include:

1. irregular periods, which are more common in the first six to 12 months after your first injection
2. increased spotting and breakthrough bleeding
3. a change in appetite
4. weight gain
5. a change in sexual drive and interest
6. nausea
7. tender, sore breasts
8. a headache
9. mood change

Hope I have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I ll be glad to help you.

All the best.

With warm regards,
Dr. Sanjay Kini
