Are Bloating, Feeling Hungry, Back Pain And Pelvic Cramps Are Side Effects Of IUD Insertion?

I had Mirena inserted 6 weeks after I had twins via c-section. I still had post-partum bleeding at time of insertion & bled/spotted for about four months after insertion. My doctor said it was normal & gave me some oral bc to help stop bleeding. Since it stopped, I've had very light, regular periods & minor cramping. Earlier this month I had a very light period. I had sex after my period, & the very next day I had heavy, period-like bleeding that lasted for a week. I am currently 5 days late for my period & had all my usual PMS symptoms. Now I am still bloated, tired, hungry, & have back pain & pelvic cramps. In addition to having the IUD, I also take 30mg of Adderall XR for my ADD & have taken it for three years (except during my pregnancy). It has not been effective for the past two days, which is something I have never experienced. Could I be pregnant? Is this a normal side-effect of the IUD?

It is rare to get pregnant with an IUD in place, but it does happen occasionally. I would suggest that you consider taking a home pregnancy test just to make sure. If it is positive, call your doctor right away because an IUD can be dangerous to an ongoing pregnancy. However, it will probably be negative. In that case, it is most likely the IUD that is causing the delay in the period. That is because it is very common to miss periods, or even have no periods at all when there is an IUD in place, that is usually because of the progesterone that is in the Mirena.

It would also be a good idea to check if the strings are where they belong. Your doctor might have taught you how to do that when you had it placed. I would be a little concerned that the Mirena might have come out of place when you had that heavy bleeding. It is probably fine., but worth checking anyway. If you can't feel the strings, call your doctor and have him/her check for you. If indeed the IUD is not in place, then you certainly could be pregnant. I hope this answer helps you, good luck!
