Are Calcium Supplements Necessary While On Atorvastatin?

I am 56 years old and post surgical menopausal for 19 years. For the last 19 years I have taken calcium supplements. Especially after stopping hormones 10 years ago. I am now on Atorvastatin 20 mg which contains calcium. I stopped taking calcium supplements since the Atorvastatin contained calcium. Was that a good call? My bone density tests were good.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

As your bone density tests are normal, I will suggest you to check serum calcium level, which gives better idea.

If these reports are normal, then I think you do not need any calcium supplement in any form. So, I will suggest you to eat calcium rich foods like milk, egg, ragi et cetera and that's enough.

There is no need of calcium supplements necessary while on atorvastatin provided your all reports are within normal limit. I will suggest you to consult with the orthopedician for second opinion.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shyam B. Kale
