Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, i m doing a debate for a school project on why people should not take medications. So far it s been pretty challenging but I need good explanations. For example, so far i have that even though the FDA approves medications, it doesnt always mean they re beneficial. Vioxx was recalled in 2004 after it caused 27,000 people to have heart attacks or sudden deaths. What are other good topics on why medications are bad?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi Thank you for asking HCM I have gone through your query. Medications are given to a patient according to benefits which outweighs the risks. Also FDA approves medications after 3 phases of drug trials. Initially in animals and then in human volunteers. But some medications will have some side effects after long term intake. That is what you can see in case of Vioxx (Rofecoxib). It is also monitored in patients if they are taking drugs for long term for any adverse effects. If you not taking the drug for a disease, for eg for dyslipidemia statins you may get heart attack if not taking it. It has side effects for some but when considering the benefits they get that is very small. Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear. Thanks.
