Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Are Confusion, Lack Of Energy, Memory Loss, Hot Sweats, Lack Of Concentration And Vertigo A Sign Of Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome?
My son age 32 has self diagnosed himself with post acute withdrawal syndrome through looking at online symptom checker sites. He did drink and binge drink but not more than most young, single people and does not consider himself to be an alcoholic and does not miss alcohol after quitting 5 weeks ago. He never experienced any alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Is it possible that he can have post acute withdrawal symptom? He has been to several doctors at university hospitals and no one can diagnose his problem. So he has self diagnosed. His symptoms are confusion, lack of energy, memory loss, occasion hot sweats, lack of concentration, periods of vertigo. All of this starting immediately after having one episode of a seizure while drinking 2 years ago. No more seizures since. Second question. Could any of this be the result of some thing he may have contracted during months of traveling in Brazil and Southeast Asia? Perhaps something the CDC might be aware of? Thank you for your service.
As per my clinical experience, acute withdrawal syndrome occurs in the period of 2-3 days once the chronically ingested material in terms of smoke, drink, inhalant, glue or injection form is stopped abruptly. Alcohol has stopped since 5 weeks and hence its withdrawal will not show up at this time point.
There can be possibility of simultaneous intake of CNS stimulant drug as Heroin, Amphetamine or others which can be pausing issues of loss of memory, confusion, lack of concentration with excess sweats in time period of over ingestion to pause above mentioned clinical picture. Kindly interrogate in details regarding the use of any such substances, depending upon which the management protocols vary widely and precisely as well.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
