Are Constipation And Blood In Stools Causes For Concern?

My 54 old husband has had deep, thick blood in his stool for over 3 months (yes, I know, he should have told me ;-) In addition, he has pain and discomfort in his pelvic/groin area above the penis. Lastly, he is also lightheaded when he stands up, is short of breath, and has some nausea. We saw a GI doc, and have a colonoscopy scheduled for this week. Any ideas what might be causing this? (To complicate matters, he has had RSD/CRPS for 10 years, and is on opioids for this, which causes constipation issues). Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Based on the description it appears that your husband could be suffering from internal hemorrhoids. This could have been well precipitated by constipation, which might be aggrevated by medication he is using.
The other symptoms you have described could be related to anaemia caused due to blood loss for a period of about 3 months.
Kindly go ahead with the colonoscopy as scheduled, which could reveal what the exact cause could be. Accordingly, it needs to be managed.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
