Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Are Diarrhea, Lower Abdominal Pain And Peripheral Edema Suggestive Of Ulcerative Colitis?
A 25-year-old who comes to the clinic with a history of diarrhea, lower abdominal pain, and weight loss of approximately 40 pounds over the past 3 months. He also has noticed peripheral dependent edema. His hemoglobin is 8.0 and hematocrit 27%. What is the most likely cause of his signs and symptoms, and what diagnostic tests will he require? Crohn disease or ulcerative colitis?
I believe that neither ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease can be suspected in this case. I believe that the main probable cause can be Celiac disease. He needs an endoscopy, and biopsy of intestinal villi.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Olgeta Xhufka, General & Family Physician
