Are Dizziness, Muscle Cramps And Dehydration Symptoms Of Meniere S Disease?

Can Ménière s disease or Vertigo last for a few weeks before symptoms start to get better? I had all the symptoms of dehydration, muscle cramps too, and have recently started a new intense exercise program. Most of the symptoms have disappeared but some dizziness has remained-especially when I m in bed and turn my head to the left. Turning my head to the right or left otherwise is not a problem. Thank you, Robin

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for your query on HCM

"As"per your clinical history is concerned in meniere's disease you will get symptoms like -

1)Recurring episodes of vertigo

2)Hearing loss

3)Ringing in the ear

4)Feeling of fullness in the ear

So muscle cramps and dehydration is not associated with it if you have no nausea and vomiting history present. Because severe vertigo leads to nausea and vomiting.

Do take medications as per your doctor's advice and do exercise as per your physiotherapist. You can talk with your treating doctor about [Meniett pulse generator] which you can use at home 2-3 times a day.

Do few lifestyle changes like this -

1)Eat regularly. Distributing evenly what you eat and drink throughout the day helps regulate your body fluids. Eat approximately the same amount of food at each meal. You may also eat five or six smaller meals rather than three meals a day.
2)Limit salt. Consuming foods and beverages high in salt can increase fluid retention. So try to eat less of sodium each day.

3)Try to avoid monosodium glutamate (MSG). Some prepackaged food products and prepared restaurant foods contain MSG, a type of sodium. MSG can contribute to fluid retention. Check ingredient labels before eating.

4)Try to avoid foods and beverages that contain caffeine, such as chocolate, coffee, tea and certain soft drinks, have stimulant properties that can make symptoms worse.
5)Stop smoking. Avoiding nicotine may lessen the severity of Meniere's disease symptoms.

6)Try to manage stress and anxiety. If required you can take help from psychotherapists.

7)Try to control your exposure to allergens and managing allergies with appropriate treatment may help manage Meniere's disease.

Hope that helps
