Are Early Periods While On Microgynon A Cause For Concern?
Daughter has been on Microgynon for approx 4 months after switching from Yazflex which caused her to have a period continuously. For the first two months on Microgynon her period started as expected on the placebo pills. The last two months, her period has started a week before the placebo pills, today her period has started 11 days before the placebo pills. She consistently takes the pills every day at the same time of day. Any advice?
Menstrual irregularities are common while starting or switching between contraceptive pills. I would suggest your daughter to look for the bleeding pattern in the next few weeks. Continuous bleeding for more than 7 days or bleeding with clots should be treated to prevent excess blood loss and anemia. Any recent history of newer medications should also be checked.
Antispasmodics or pain killers like Ibuprofen has been proven to be helpful in reducing the bleeding in some women. I would also suggest your daughter to take a pelvic ultrasound to rule out other causes of irregular bleeding and hormonal imbalance.Thyroid function test should also be done to rule out Hypothyroidism.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
