Are Elevated Liver Enzyme Levels Due To Depression And Alcoholism?
Hello, I am inquiring for boyfriend. He has had two blood tests several months apart. The first time it showed that he might have hypothyroidism based on the thyroid and high bilirubin. However the physician wanted to test again since sometimes there can be errors. The second blood test showed that he had elevated ALT (SGPT) -75 unit/L and elevated SGOT (91 unit/L). But the other tests were normal. I have read that these can be influenced by antidepressants and alcohol. He currently take trazidone and celexa but in small doses. He started taking these medicines shortly after the first blood test. He have no other health conditions and is a fit 30 year old male. He drinks 2-3 drinks a week. Should he chalk this up to the antidepressants or go in for more tests. I have a feeling the doctor will say that it is the antidepressants.
Hello dear Understand your concern Do not worry. Alcohol can cause elevation of liver enzyme Your enzymes is not that high. level more than 3 to 5 times suggest liver toxicity. But slight rise may be due alcohol.
Stop the alcohol for few months if possible And then repeat the test Continue your anti depression medicine as it is important.
Hope this may help you Best regards Dr. Sagar
