Are Excessive Hunger, Profuse Sweating And Weakness Associated With Hypoglycemia?

My 57 year old husband periodically becomes overcome with hunger, heavy sweating & then weakness. He ll continue to eat until the symptoms begin to wain. He just had an episode and he was dripping with sweat! His general practitioner tells him its nothing and to eat small snacks throughout the day so it doesn t cause the tiredness afterwards. If its hypoglycemia, shouldn t it be treated? Also , he does have a family history of heart disease

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, hypoglycemia does cause hunger & sweating while the other symptoms are fatigue, pale skin, irritability & tingling around the mouth. It needs to be treated & managed; else it may lead to complications like confusions, seizures, visual disturbances or loss of consciousness. The treatment depends upon whether hypoglycemia is induced by diabetes or is unrelated to diabetes. If it is not related to diabetes, its not much of a problem. The person can take the help of a dietitian & regulate the meal plans, he should always carry some sweet candy for emergency purpose. If it is related to diabetes, you should visit ER & get your husband evaluated, insulin or other medications will have to be monitored, blood glucose levels needs to be monitored & maintained with medications & dietitian. Regular exercise & staying away from all addictions is must.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
