Hi. One year ago I had L4 / L5 and L5/S1 removed and hardware put in place to stabilise spine. Recovery was slow but eventually got back to every day life. Pain is not completely deminished but I am so much better than I was. Before my operation I had eight years of progressive lower back problems which resulted in loosing power in legs and bladder. My question is, can I join a gym and what excersises should I avoid. Many thanks Sandra (Ireland)
As per my clinical experience, there are particular concerns for post operative work up in gym as below: - You can obviously join gym post spinal surgery at a period of 12 months - Particular maneuvers with gradual twisting, bending of lower back - Avoid sudden thrust, hyper flexion, extension movements of the lower back which may pause extra jerks to surgical site - Jogging, swimming are the best
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
