Are Foul Smelling Stools And Frequent Bowel Movements In A Diabetic Lady A Cause For Concern?

My mother is 94, has type II diabetes, and has recently had such foul smelling bowel movements that I almost have to go outside to escape the odor. She has lost her sense of smell, so it doesn t bother her. She has also complained that her bowels move four or five times daily. I m concerned that this might mean something serious.

Dear- the intestine can have slow digestion and that produces more bloating and gas, which can be foul smelling. Also ,increased in bowel movement can be secondary to absorption problems. Diabetes can cause decreased digestion which might be the reason for her complaint. You can try with probiotic vitamin to see if will help her to have better bowel movement. If still like this and you see any weight loss, you might need to bring her to her doctor to do laboratory workup and evaluation.
