Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, my thyroid was radiated in 1997 and I have been on levothryoxin since. Currently my dosage is .1, for 6 days a week. I have also developed IBS. Is there any correlation between an underactive thyroid and IBS? What can I do to find either eliminate the IBS or at lease control it? Thank you.
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Hypothyroidism is due to decreased levels of thyroid hormones. This condition can be corrected by administration of thyroid hormones externally, like the way in which you have been taking. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is primarily caused due to inflammation of the bowels. It is not related to underlying thyroid disorder. IBS can be controlled and treated by means of diet and medications. Kindly get a proper evaluation done by consulting Physician for appropriate management. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
