Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Are 1200 IU of vitamin D in a multivitamin as effective as taking just a vitamin D supplement of the same dosage? I always wonder if a particular vitamin is being compromised in a multivitamin because there is such a mixture of vitamins in them. Thanks, Carmela
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Vitamin D taken with other vitamins is the same effective as viitamin D taken separately (for the same dose). This is because vitamin D function and absorption are not effected by other vitamins or supplements. If vitamin D is taken with calcium supplements is even better because vitamin D increases calcium absorption.
The only one that would be effected by other supplements is iron if it is taken with calcium because calcium reduces absorption of iron so it is not recommended to have them together but at least 4 hours apart.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind regards, Antoneta Zotaj, MD
