Are Nausea, Vomiting And Headaches Side Effects Of IVIG Treatment For Guillain–Barré Syndrome?

My niece, 10 years old, has had a relapse of Guillain Barre. Doctors are giving her IVIG, starting a few days ago. She is now experiencing Nausea and vomiting, and severe headache. She sat in the dark bathroom today in the hospital because the light hurt her eyes. Could this be from the IVIG treatment, or part of the Guillain Barre?

Hi,
IVIG usually causes headache as a common side effect. Though rare nausea and vomiting can also occur and Guillain Barre Syndrome(GBS) is not likely the cause behind nausea and vomiting.
The photosensitivity of eyes (light hurting the eyes) could be due to the headache and also GBS could be contributing to it as the syndrome causes changes in pupil. Hope the photosensitivity would come down over the days of IVIG treatment.
I hope the above information has solved your queries. Thanks for writing into healthcarenmagic. All the best fro your niece. Have a nice day.
