Are Sore Throat And Dysphasia Symptoms Of Oral Cancer?

I have a friend who has complained of a sore throat and disphasia for more than a year. He has only Medicare and has yet to be assigned a primary care physician. He is terrified he may have oral cancer. Unfortunately, it will take months to see an ENT. What would you suggest?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Sore throat and dyspagia does not always indicate that the underlying cause is cancer. Hence, let him not be worried about it right now. He can take the following treatment as such symptoms are commonly caused due to upper respiratory tract infections.
1. Do salt water gargling with warm water thrice daily.
2. Use steam inhalation to relieve throat and nasal cavity congestion.
3. Take mucolytic syrup containing Bromhexine with Guaifenesin.
4. Use medicated lozenges for throat soothening effect.
5. Strictly avoid consumption of cold items like cool drinks and ice cream.
Gradually, his symptoms should improve.
You can get his throat examined at a later date on consultation with ENT specialist.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
