Are Split Gums In The Area Of Stitches For Tooth Extraction A Cause For Concern?

I had my wisdom teeth extracted 4 years ago. I recovered fairly quickly and had no complications. However, 4 years later my gums seem to have split where they were stitched up after the wisdom teeth extraction. There is no pain or bleeding, the skin just seems to be separated revealing other layers of skin underneath. Do I need to visit my dentist or will it heal on its own?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that the mucosa of the gums on the top most layers in the area of extracted wisdom tooth sit have not completely approximated while healing was taking place and the two flaps seems to have healed as it is and the two flaps re appearing to have separated apart..

It will not heal on its own as it has already healed and although it will not cause you any pain but the area can accumulate food and cause bacterial overgrowth and infection..

I would therefore suggest you to consult an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigation like x ray can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

If needed they can stitch or suture the separated ends of mucosa together to initiate healing and closing up the split areas..
As of now you should do warm saline gargles and also gargle with plain water after eating anything to avoid food accumulation in that area..
Chew from opposite side as much as possible..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
