Are Stomach Cramps And Sore Hips Symptoms Of Toxic Shock Syndrome?

Hi, so basically last night I left in a tampon for about 14 hours. As soon as I woke up I replaced it with a new one. Since I was worried I might have toxic shock syndrome I looked it up and some said it was fine and others said to get to the doctors asap. I decided to just look out for symptoms. Not long after waking up I had sharp pains in my stomach, although they weren t too bad. They were in the area I get cramps so it might be that. I ve had them for about 5 hours, the pain going from barely there to painful but definitely bearable throughout the day. A little bit ago my hips and around that area suddenly felt really sore for a little bit, and now they feel only a little sore. Since muscle aches is another one of the symptoms I m worried I have TSS. Although slight pain is kind of an everyday thing for me, and if I hadn t left the tampon in for that long , it would seem completely normal. By the way I really can t afford to go to the doctors and pay for any treatment, and I don t have insurance so I m hoping to avoid that as much as possible. Do you think I have TSS and if so, is there anything I can do about it at home, or at least something relatively cheap. (Sorry for the really long paragraph I just want to make sure you fully understand my situation and symtoms)

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If you do not develop fever, skin rash, weakness, etc, it is unlikely you are having toxic shock syndrome (TSS).
Hip pain and stomach cramps are not typical symptoms of TSS and you did not let the tampon long enough to cause you TSS, so I would say you do not need to worry about this.

On the other hand, you have to be cautious as there is real risk of developing TSS if you do not change the tampons frequent enough so please make sure you check you have removed a tampon before inserting a new one and make sure you replace them every few hours.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.
