Are Teething, Salivating And Touching Of Tongue Normal In A 17 Month Old ?
Hi there. My son is 17 months old and he has been teething heavily for the past few weeks. He's been salivating heavily for the past few days, and very interestingly, also touching his tongue for 2 or 3 days. I'm not sure if there is more to it than teething ..?
As per your complain excessive salivation is commonly seen during teething as during teething there can be inflammation of the gums and irritation inside mouth due to which the salivary glands become more active and stimulated leading to excessive salivation..
As the child has less controlled reflexes therefore the saliva drools..
Touching of tongue can be due to inflammation and soreness of tongue that he must be trying to relieve the pain..
The symptoms can be very much due to teething only and nothing serious..
You can give him cooled teething rings to bite on.. Do cool compresses over his guns and tongue.. Give him soft and bland foods.. Feed with plenty of fluids.. In case if there is gum pain you can apply Lidocaine jelly after consulting a Pedodontist... You can give Tylenol to reduce pain and discomfort..
Hope this information helps..
Regards..
