Are There Any Alternate Available For RSV Vaccination?
Hi..My boby baby was born pre term (32 weeks gestation) and is 5 months old now. We are in Chennai (India). I was told that RSV vaccination may be considered for him before he completes 6 months. Unfortunately RSV vaccination is not available in India at the moment and need to be imported (with suitable cold storage). It's also very expensive. Can you pls advise me if RSV vaccination would be required considering the fact its not available here and also we have a moderate tropical climate.. Thanks.
RSV or Respiratory Syncytial Virus is the causative agent of a condition called bronchioitis which affects children between 6 months and 3 years of age. Although pretty common, the treatment of this condition is pretty simple. It resolves in around 5 days with nebulisation and certain supportive medications. Nebulisation can even be given at home. It is not a life threatening condition. So vaccination is optional. Had it been essential, it would have been made available and also included in the standard immunisation schedule, which is not the case. It is just good to have. I do not think that you need to worry about it and you need not try to import it either. I do not relate the fact of tropical climate as it is widely seen in India.
Hi...Greetings form Chennai, KK Nagar. I am also from Chennai and as a practicing pediatrician in the local area, I am seeing many Bronchiolitis cases. But according the medical literature the European and west born babies suffer a lot with RSV bronchiolitis. But according to my expereince Indian born babies do suffer form RSV Bronchiolitis, but not up to the severity of the west. But this is my personal opinion. I agree that RSV vaccine will be helpful for your kid. But if it is not possible, I suggest you to not to miss any of the other available vaccines in India. Please put all optional vaccines too, because option is only for money. Not for the disease. Regards - Dr. Sumanth
