Are There Any Anti Depressants Which Do Not Result In Weight Gain?

I started taking anti-depressants a year ago and have gained over 130 pounds. My doctor says it is normal and acceptable because a lot of people go through this when they take anti-depressants. It is not acceptable to me because now I weigh 300 pounds- I can t sleep at night, I have never been this heavy and it is hard to accept this body. Is there such a thing as non-fattening anti-depressants?

Hi,

I can understand you concern although you did not mention the actual names of anti-depressants that you have been taking for the last one year. There is no such 'non-fattening anti-depressants' available. However, anti-depressants like escitalopram, duloxetine, venlafaxine or bupropion are less likely to cause weight gain.

Weight gain is also less likely to occur with Fluoxetine and Sertraline when they are used for less than six months. I advise you to consult your doctor to find an antidepressant that helps with your depression symptoms and doesn’t result in unwanted weight gain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
