Are There Any Major Long Term Concerns With Ablation Procedure?

Hello, I am 44 years old and I went to my gyn last week for my annual and a few days ago I found out that my pap was normal. During my visit, my gyn suggested ablation (the type with the balloon and hot water) to combat heavy periods that are sometimes irregular. Surprisingly, not a lot of women agree to have this procedure when menstruation issues are typical and minimal; however, the procedure is VERY tempting. Are there any major long term concerns with this procedure? Why aren t more women having it done?

Hi,

Not just PAP smear, but a complete evaluation to rule out any more problems have to be done. By ablation the cavity is going to be obliterated, no further testing inside the uterus can be done.

Causes, why this method is not so famous, are
1. Having a period gives women a sense of everything is ok. So no periods may get doubt of pregnancy, any unseen problems.
2. Endometrial cavity evaluation has to be done, to rule out any pills or fibroids or even malignancy. They may cause for failed ablation.
3. If the whole cavity is not fully ablated, bleeding may recur. Then hysterectomy may be the only option.
4. Medical line of management has lots of options and economical.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
