Are Varicose Veins Associated With Tender Blood Clots?

Hello Dr Rynne: My mom is 83 yrs old in relatively good health but suffers from varicose veins she's had for many years. She is concerned because of a small tender area that seems to be moving up her leg and now it is on the side of the right leg. She is concerned this is a blood clot. What are your thoughts?
