Are Weight Gain And Water Retention The Side Effects Of Zoloft?

I have been on zoloft for years, I always noticed side effects but never realized it was the zoloft and always thought it was just hormonal. Last year I increased my dose to 75mg from 50mg and that is when I really started having issues- Breast growth and pain, unexplained weight gain, water retention and an extreme lack of energy. Since realizing it was related to the zoloft I have started to wean off and when I did my symptoms amplified! I am now nearly 8 weeks into my wean and on 25mg with worse side effects than before! The main reasons I wanted to come off it is because of the weight gain and breast tenderness and in the last 8 weeks they have been worse than ever!

Hello,

I can understand your concern. All antidepressants present with some or other side effects that may be troublesome to the patients. However, the doctor prescribes them only when they judge that their benefits outweigh the side effects they are causing.

In addition, I am concerned if you have reduced the dose after consulting your doctor or yourself? As you have been taking these medicines for long time, it is not advisable to wean off or reduce dose over very short intervals. It might take longer to get off them then you think. If weight gain and breast tenderness are not too trouble, I would advise you to have some patience and contact your doctor regarding the symptoms and management.

I hope this answer helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Let me know if you have follow up questions.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
