Are Wheezing And Popping Sounds While Lying On Bed Symptoms Of Emphysema?
Hi there, Am afraid to say I have smoked heavily 15-20 cigarettes a day for 15 years, now age 31. For the last 7 months I have noticed a high pitch wheeze on exhale when laying in bed. Also creaking/popping/bubbling sounds-mainly at night. On 2 occasions I have coughed up clear sputum in the morning. No shortness of breath, no general cough. Of course I will visit my doctor, and have redoubled efforts to quit (been trying for years.) I wondered, if possible, how likely a progressive disease such as COPD/emphysema is in my case or is there a chance the damage is still reversible/non-progressive i.e. asthma
The wheezing and popping sounds while lying on bed may be part of asthma or COPD. The key differentiating feature is pulmonary function test with expert pulmonologist for the evaluation of response to bronchodilator therapy in terms of improvement in FEV1 percentage. The total evaluation includes: FEV1 FVC Ratio of FEV1 to FVC Diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
