Athlete, Having Cracking Sound In Foot, Movement In Top Of Foot, Painful. Is Taking MRI Necessary?
My son has a foot overuse injury from being a cross country, indoor and outdoor track high school athlete. He does not have a break in his foot. Had an X-ray and bone scan. Would an MRI be necessary? Foot makes many cracking sounds and he feels a lot of movement on the top of the foot. Pain at times. Been 5 months since on set. He's had pt and a running analysis plus been to a podiatrist.
As your son is having this problem since 5 months, its more of chronic nature. X ray rules out fractures and dislocations in most patients and a bone scan is highly sensitive for and clinically undiagnosed fracture or increased bone metabolism.
There could be something to do with ligaments in the foot, a small partial tear does not present with much pain but would explain any dull aching pain. Any ligamentous injury is best diagnosed using MRI scan. This will also pick any small joint fluid if present and anything to do with the soft tissues in the foot.
Hope this helps.
