Baby Had Dehydration Due To Stomach Virus. Prescribed BRAT Diet. Cries For Milk. Having Diarrhoea, gas. Suggestions?
My 17 month old was in the ER last week for dehydration due to a stomach virus. We brought him in due to excessive vomiting . While we were there he started to have diharrea. They recommended an all liquid diet for 24 hours, but no milk. I gave him milk after 1 day an the dihearra started again. I took him back to te pediatrician and they recommended the B.R.A.T diet. He wouldn t eat any of the things the diet consisted of. He cries for his bottle and now he is still having dihearra and horrible smelling gas. Any idea to what may be going on with him?
Milk is best avoided when gastroenteritis is suspected. It can worsen the symptoms.
Please try to follow the B.R.A.T diet as much as possible. Especially the rice. Wash the rice well , add it in a pressure cooker along with sufficient amount of water and pressure cook, till it has a watery porridge like consistency.Add salt according to taste. The watery rice porridge with salt
has all the ingredients required (water, sugar from the rice, salt) to combat dehydration and will definitely help him recover. Give him small feeds. Initially even 1- 2 tsp is a good way to start and gradually increase according to his requirement.
I hope I have answered your question. Please do get back to me if you have further queries.
Have a great day :)
Regards,
Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan
