Baby Has Vomiting, Running Stomach. Taken Amoxil. No Relief. Treatment?

Hi Doctor, I have a 1 and a half year old little girl, Skyla since thursday last week she has been throwing up and stomach running. I took her to a Doc on Friday they gave her amoxil , probiotic some cough mixture and something for fever. I also went out and purchased something for a runny tummy. Sat evening I had her at the hosp for dehydration and they gave me some solution I could make on to keep her hydrated. It is now monday evening, still vomiting and stomach still running.

Hi there,

If the vomiting and loose stools have at least reduced in frequency and quantity , it is a good sign. She should get better in one or two days.

If vomiting , loose stools are persisting with the same intensity , now it has been 5 days, I would suggest you get her stool examination done.

Make sure she is well rehydrated. Give her oral rehydration solution. Give her rice gruel with salt.

If at any time she has very minimal urine output, dry tongue, lethargy, drowsiness, please take her to the paediatrician immediately. These are some of the signs of dehydration.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan

General & Family Physician Dr. Neelam Ashish Vanjari's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing in.
Vomiting and diarrhea in a baby could be either bacterial or viral or intolerance to some kind of food.

As she has already been given amoxil and probiotic, she should be fine after atleast 4 days. May be antibiotic given here - amoxil itself is causing diarrhea.

You can stop it after consulting with your treating physician and continue probiotic. Runny tummy will become normal. Take care of dehydration with oral rehydration solution.

Think of new food if you have introduced to your little one, which could be culprit here.
Consult pediatrician to rule out cause for vomiting and diarrhea, clinical examination will rule out causes like intususception or obstruction or find out level of dehydration.
I hope I have cleared your doubts. Revert back for further clarification.
Best regards,
Dr. Neelam.
