Baby Took Anti Anxiety Medicine Accidentally, Having More Sleep. What Should I Watch For?

My 19 month old got into my husbands anti anxiety meds tonight. We are pretty certain only 1 is missin and I was able to fish out half or more from his mouth. We called poison control and she told us to watch him for fever and vomiting and to take him to the ER if so. Is there anything else I should watch for? He went down to sleep a lot easier than normal which worries me. I've checked on him a few times and seems to respond when I touch or move him.

Hi Dear
Welcome to the HCM
Please watch for the dowsiness, any abnormal activity like deep breath, slow breathing , cold and clamy skin etc before rushing to the ER.
Simple anti anxiety medicine usually do not cause much complication and with in 4 to 6 hours there effect is washed off.
Please over hydrate her by giving lot of fluids.
Hope the query is answered.
Thanks

Hi there,

Thank you for choosing healthcaremagic.

I can understand your concern. It is good that you called poison control center.

I would like to know what type of antianxiety medication did he take. Since there are several types and they may have different action on our bodies.
Typically these cause excessive sleepiness but can also can cause decrease in blood pressure.
There are some type of medications that can cause decrease in blood sugar as well as decrease in blood pressure and heart rate.
Make sure you count the remaining tablets in the bottle and ascertain how many are missing and how many he might have chewed on before you took them out of his mouth.
It would be safer and best for him to be taken to the ER for observation for a few hours if you think he chewed on more than one.

Till then donot give him any other medication, and observe if he is more drowsy, unable to wake up or seems to be confused or unable to understand you or his legs are unusually cold or pale or if he starts to vomit excessively, then take him to the ER rightaway or call emergency medical services.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes to you.

Regards,
Dr. Sumeet.
