Back And Chest Pain. Do I Have Hiatal Hernia? Why Acid Reflux?
How can i tell if I have a hiatal hernia or just acid reflux? I have been to an er and family doctor with back and chest pain . They say that my heart and lungs are fine, they have done multiple test and chest x-rays. I have had really bad acid reflux in my throat and it hurts to eat. It feels like there is something blocking esophagus . The pain radiates to my stomach and back. Is this a sign of a hernia or acid reflux?
Hello, You can not say just by symptoms that you have hiatal hernia or not. You can get done Barium swallow examination . In this test a dye is swallowed and then x rays are taken . if there is hernia it will be seen as separate collection of the dye at lower end of esophagus (food pipe). You may require proton pump inhibitors . Then endoscopy can be done if required. For acid reflux treatment-- Antacid tablet +Domperidom Syp. antacid gel 2 tsf two times a day half an hour before meals multivitamin twice daily Keep head end of bed elevated. Avoid alcohol, Smoking Do brisk walking daily Go for walk after dinner Avoid spicy food Avoid late night coffee
