Bad Heel Pain, It Stretches Up The Achilles Tendon. Is There Any Exercise That Will Relieve Me From The Pain?

I have very bad heel pain and it stretches up the achilles tendon. Walking is a nightmare and that is distressing me more than anything that I can't enjoy walking any more. I have had it about 2 months now and I am putting on weight through lack of exercise I think. Is there any way I can help myself as in special exercises and or shoes supports. I would appreciate your advice - thank you in advance barbara campbell (Bournemouth, England)

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Barbara,

I am sorry for your pain. Most common conditions that might result in your kind of heel pain are Plantar fasciitis, which is the inflammation of a layer of tissue near heel, Achilles tendonitis which is the inflammation of a large leg muscle's end, Calcaneal spur or Heel spur which is the formation of a small bony protusion on the bone near heel. Common reasons would be excessive running or jumping, improperly fitting shoes.

Main treatment would be adequate rest to the heel for few days, application of ice packs at least two times a day near painful area and changing to nice and well fitted shoes. You might also need an X ray of foot to detect Heel spur and if the pain is very severe and not bearable with supportive measures, your doctor might choose giving a local injection containing low potent steroid like triamcinolone which should only be done under the direct supervision of a qualified doctor.

Take Care!
