Bad Sore Throat, Pain In The Head And Stiff Neck After Taking Antibiotics For Tonsillitis Like Symptoms. What Could Be The Reason?
I had tonsillitis type symptoms about two weeks ago, when I went to the doctors they said it was still viral at that moment but because I'd already had the symptoms for a while I was given antibiotics. I started taking the antibiotics and felt better but kept forgetting to take the tablets as I have an extremely poor memory. I'm still finishing the course but now I'm getting throbbing pains in my head and neck, I have a really sore throat and can barely swallow and my neck is really stiff and painful to move. Is this just because I haven't taken the antibiotics properly or is this something else?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, For a good control of infection, antibiotics are to be taken strictly as advised, to maintain it's therapeutic blood level through out the day.If taken irregularly, the risk of getting resistant to the drug appears. Same thing has happened in your case.In spite of recovering the disease process advanced & so you have aggreveted symptoms. Please consult an ENT specialist, get through checkup, you may need few investigations including culture & sensitivity test of sputum. The doctor then will prescribe suitable medicines, which you have to take regularly. You can use some tricks like-writing about medicine timings on a black board just by the side of your dinning table, a self talk after psychological concentration exercises (before going to sleep )about strong memory. Thanks.
