What Causes Sore Throat And Difficulty In Swallowing?

I m trying to figure out if I have tonsillitis, strep throat, or bronchitis. My symptoms are super sore throat, trouble swallowing, stiff neck now, somewhat of an ear ache, minor headache, slight body uncomfortability, a little mucus, but no coughing.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It seems to be acute pharyngitis (might be tonsillitis). You work-up done as follows:
• CBC
• Auscultation
• Throat swab or ASO titer
• Chest x-ray only, if needed
• Posterior pharynx examination with using tongue depressor

You can be prescribed Levocetirizine or Phenylephrine like decongestant. Salt water gargle done 3 times a day. Drink more water. Avoid excess spicy foods and fatty meals for few days.

Take vitamin C lozenges. If congestion and inflammation are more and if tonsil is much enlarged then short-term steroid as decongestant can be prescribed. Antibiotic course given if needed as per reports. Consult otorhinolaryngologist or physician for examination and further discussion.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Parth Goswami
