Bitten By A Dog, Cough, Throat Pain. Had Rabies Shot. What Now?
hello doctor, i am chris from the philippines...my son got bitten by our own dog 5 days ago....but my dog got its rabies vaccine las february 15 this year.....as per my observation on my dog from day one up to now (5th) day, my dog still dont manifest any signs of abnormal behaviuor.but my son got fever that night. but now my son has a cough and complaining of throat ache...im worried and i was thinking if i needed to take my son for a rabies shots...thanks...
I advise you to vaccinate your son with rabies vaccine as per 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28 schedule.
Observe the dog for 10 days from the bite incident and if it is healthy after 10 days you can stop the remaining last two shots with the advise of your Pediatrician.
Rabies is a fatal disease so no chance should be taken.
I suggest you to get your child vaccinated as per schedule that is day 0,3,7,14 and 28.
Keep a watch on dog for 10 days and if dog remains healthy last two doses may not be required.
Regarding symptoms of respiratory infection which is unrelated to dog bite.
Get your child examined by pediatrician .
Give acetaminophen for pain relief.
Give plenty of fluids, warm water will be soothing for throat pain.
Hi dear,
Rabies shots to dog doesn't give 100 % protection from rabies. You child always has a risk and hence it is always advisable to give rabies shots to your son irrespective of how your dog is, how much delay has happened so far. At present your son is just suffering from just a cold and it has nothing to do with rabies.
Take care

Bitten By A Dog, Cough, Throat Pain. Had Rabies Shot. What Now?
Hi Chris, Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic. I advise you to vaccinate your son with rabies vaccine as per 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28 schedule. Observe the dog for 10 days from the bite incident and if it is healthy after 10 days you can stop the remaining last two shots with the advise of your Pediatrician. Check his vaccination for Tetanus toxoid status. The fever is looking like resulted from an upper respiratory tract infection as there is cough and throat pain. For fever you can give Tylenol in prescribed dose. Consult your Pediatrician for rabies vaccination advise and for the treatment of his throat infection. Hope I have answered your query. Regards.
