Bitten By Pet On Chin. Anti Rabies Vaccination. Taking Antibiotics. Is Suturing Performed Is Right For Dog Bite?

Hi Doctor,

I was bitten by my pet on my chin, i immediately washed with soap & when to hospital, since the bite was deep in my chin the doctor did Suturing to close the wound & took TT shot. However the next day when i went to my physician she said the wound should not have been stitched since it was a dog bite & i am at a great risk, She gave Anti rabie vaccine and advised 4 more shot (0,3,7,14,28) days, Then i went to my veterinarian & informed the same about the Suturing,he said nothing to worry its ok to do it if the bite is in the face. Please let me know if suturing performed is ok for dog bite. I am taking antibiotic tablets too.

Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Suturing is usually not advised in dog bite wounds and they should be kept open.

But nothing to worry as you started taking antirabies vaccines as per the schedule.

Complete the schedule as advised.

And consult the physician to know whether anti rabies human immunoglobulin is required as the bite is on face and it is deep.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.

Psychiatrist Dr. Anjana Rao Kavoor's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

Surturing dog bite facial injuries is a controversial topic.

Research has been done in this area and the results are as follows:

Intuitively, younger patients and patients with greater severity injuries are more likely to undergo repair. Overall, primary repair of pediatric facial dog bite injuries, including complex soft-tissue injuries, is safe when performed in conjunction with antibiotic administration.

Keeping the above in mind, if you are on antibiotics, bitten by a pet dog and taking anti rabies shots, you have no reason to worry. It is a very safe treatment and suturing was needed as it was a deep wound.

Hope this helps
