Blocked Ear After Having Cold. Pain In The Throat With Swelling. Viral Infection Or Sinusitis?

I had a cold last week and it went into my ear....my right ear has been very blocked for the last ten days. Last night, my throat started hurting a lot on my right side and today I noticed that the roof of my mouth on the back right side (same side as ear) is very tender and feels like it might be a big swollen. Is this a virus still? Sinus? Do I need to see the doctor?

I have concluded yur complaints regarding sore throat and blckade in right ear. As you said this is for last 10 days swelling at the root of your mouth and back of throat on right side.

You are suffering from acute pharyngitis with eustachian catarrah. This actually happens because throat infection has reached to involve eustachian tube at pharyngeal end and ultimately due to infective oedema this tube had been blocked thus you are feeling blockade of ear.

You have asked weather it s bacterial or viral this can be decided only by Culture and sensitivity of throat swab.

Since you are not having any nasal symptoms so sinusitis is unlikely in your case.

You may take -

(a) Antibiotic- preferably broadspectrum.

(b) Anti inflammatory & Analgesic.

(c) Decongestant & steam inhalation.

Hello kirsten,

From your description it is clear that you are having an ENT infection probably due to bacteria infection such as staph or strep or others. The infection probably has spread from your ears to your throat and finally to your buccal cavity.
It will be wise for you at this point to see a doctor after going through the ER. ENT infection may sometimes complicate to encephalitis or meningitis.
You will require careful examination and maybe later require effective antibiotics and analgesia/NSAID treatment.
