Blood Clot In Head, Unconscious

hello dear dr. my uncle had a head injury which resulted in blood clotting in his head. He had a successful surgery but still unconscious despite after 12 days. He he can bend his knees, takes juices through feeding machine, ... I am concerned a bit as he s in a private clinic in Ethiopia, East Africa charging a lot of money per day. Family allowed only once or twice a day for few minutes when the doctors permit. Does it really take this long to regain consciousness , specially given the fact he does not have other complications? Or they re just keeping him there for the money which is not uncommon in this part of the world?

Hi.
The present state of unconsciousness is more likely to be due to the primary injury. Surgery could only remove a blood clot and subsequent compression upon the brain. Surgery per se cannot directly cure primary injury to the brain cells. This opinion stands true provided your uncle had fallen unconscious immediately on injury and unconsciousness persisted thereafter (until he went in for surgery), about which you haven't mentioned anything.
