Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
hi, my 7 year old son has been having blood in his stool , not all the time but I can say about 60% of the time. The blood is fresh red, at first I thought it could be bc of a tear, but he complains from stomachache almost couple of times a week, today he called from school needed to be picked up bc he was in sever pain. He felt better after a short while and eating something. A few hours he had a bowel movement and again fresh red blood mixed or swirled with his poop. He got his stool tested about a year ago at his physical and all result came back normal. Please advise....
Blood in stool can be caused by anal tear (fissure) or hemorrhoids, but such blood is usually on the surface of the stool and appears on the toilet paper as well.
Blood mixed with stool is a symptom which for sure needs further investigation. The blood is mixed because the bleeding source is far enough in the large intestine so the stool and the blood has time to get mixed. It can be caused by inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohns disease), bacterial infection (usually diarrhea appears), large intestine polyps (in such young age it is only possible if hereditary disease is present like FAP or Juvenile polyposis).
I suggest you to visit gastroenterologist and have colonoscopy for your son performed.
Hope this will help.
Regards.
