And if so how bad is it? Oh, it was 156 over 96. How is that is it bad or Okay? This is my husbands blood pressure. He s supposed to take a D.O.T Physical prior to becoming a truck driver and the physical costs $139.00 so I was wondering if his blood pressure is considered bad because if it is I don t want to pay all that money just to have him fail the physical because of his blood pressure.
You have got Stage 1 Hypertension.
Since arterial pressure varies throughout the day, measurements intended to monitor changes over longer time frames should be taken at the same time of day to ensure that the readings are comparable. Suitable times are:
* immediately after awakening (before washing/dressing and taking breakfast/drink), while the body is still resting,
* immediately after finishing work.
Your blood pressure is 156/96 mmHg. Pulse pressure is 156--96 = 60 mmHg. Optimum pulse pressure is 40 mmHg. Research suggests that an elevated pulse pressure may be a strong predictor of heart problems, especially for older adults. Generally, a pulse pressure greater than 60 mm Hg is abnormal.
Routine lab tests are recommended before beginning treatment of high blood pressure to determine organ or tissue damage or other risk factors. These lab tests include urinalysis, blood cell count, blood chemistry (potassium, sodium, creatinine, fasting glucose, total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol), and an ECG (electrocardiogram). Additional tests may be recommended based on your condition.
Consult your doctor.
