Blood Test Done, High Creatine Kinase, Prescribed Cholesterol Lowering Medication. Suggestion?
My mother has just had a blood test and her Creatine Kinase (CK) levels are very high. Her doctor has suggested that the cholesterol lowering medication she is on could be the cause. I cannot find any information that suggests it could be caused this way. From what I can see it all relates to muscle damage. Could you give me your opinion?

The enzyme Creatine kinase levels will be elevated in blood when there is muscle damage. This can occur in cardiac problems (myocardial infarction) and in skeletal muscle damage.
Propably your mother might be taking some STATIN preparation (Atorvastatin or Rosuvastatin) to lower her cholesterol levels. The most common side effects with these drugs is Myalgias (painful muscles), which is not so concerning. But at times, they may produce serious muscle damage (Rhabdomyolysis) which may result in Renal failure. In this setting, the blood levels of Creatine kinase are very much elevated. So, for this reason your treating doctor might have ordered to stop the cholesterol lowering drug (especially Statins).
