Broken Arm Below The Shoulder. Had Surgery. Severe Itching. Treatment?
Hi my father has broken his arm just under the shoulder. He has been operated on and small plates have been placed into his arm. The stitches(made of iron) no idea what they are called sorry have been removed, but my father who is 78 years old cannot sleep and suffers because arm itches tremendously. What can we do to help him?
Itching in operated arm can be due to release of a chemical at the healing site which is known as histamine. This chemical is one of the mediator for healing & part of inflammatory process.
To get relief from this you may give him an anti histaminic medicine like levocetrizine, cetrizine, loratidine ,etc. on prescription of your doctor.Never give them without asking from your doctor.
You should also check about presence of any local infection in that area. This can be a reaction of some adhesive or solutions used for dressing the wound.
Hope this all will help you.
With best wishes.
