Bronchial Asthma, Using Foracote And Asthalin. Regular Lung Functional Test?
My husband 47years old suffering from bronchial asthma since 1992. Now for last 10 years he has been using foracote-200 inhaler twice daily and sometime use asthalin inhaler along with the former.physically he is strong enough. Should we go to doctor regularly for his lungs functional test. Is there any better medication for him? Plz advise.
The medicine that he is using are the mainstay of treatment of asthma and if his symptoms are well controlled and he is enjoying a normal quality of life then there is no need to change/increase the medication. Infact you may try step down of his treatment ie reducing the frequency or number of drugs. However, this should be done under supervision of a pulmonologist.
Hi
Thanks for query.
See the most important thing in treatment of asthma is to acheive and maintain control of asthma. If your husband has no night symptoms, less than twice a week symptoms, normal physical activity, less than twice a week use of asthalin inhaler and normal lung function then your husband has acheived asthma control. In that case the dose reduction of your current asthma medication has to be done if those controlled is maintained for atleast 3 months. So i advise you -
1. consult a pulmonologist
2. get locally examined
3. ask him whether control has acheived or not
4. go for a pulmonary function testing
5. let him do the necessary changes of your husband's current medication.
Usually it is better to have a lung function testing every 3 months or you can maintain a peak-flow chart by regular measurement of his peak flow by using a portable peak-flow meter. Because in asthma treatment self monitoring is very much important.
Thank you.
most important things is to find out the triggering factors.your husband should maintain a diary and try to find out things which trigger him, regular use of medication.this is a life long problem.he has to take treatment regularly in order to prevent exacerbrations .There is no need to go to doctor for lungs function test. Puchase 1 peak expiratory flow meter.Daily maintain the recordings of the flow meter. These things if you follow your husbands asthma will be under control.
