Calf Muscle Cramping. Taking Gabapentin For Pain Due To Herniated Disc In The Neck. Any Ideas?

Hello. Over the last three months I ve experienced severe calf muscle cramping. I am 54 years old, male, in generally good health. I have been prescribed gabapentin to address pain from a slightly herniated disc in my neck . I am on no other medications , but take a multi-vitamin. I have no history of leg injuries or prior cramping. Any ideas?

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM. Generally, calf muscle cramps & cervical disc herniations are not related to each other. Calf muscle cramps results due to many causes
- It could be a simple nocturnal cramp which would respond well to Vit E supplementations
- they could also develop in Hypocalcemia (low serum calcium) resulting in tetany (not tetanus)
- calf cramps will also be seen in Lumabar spinal canal stenosis resulting in neurogenic claudication
- TAO (thrombo angitis obliterans -narrowing of blood vessels) also produces calf cramps which is usually seen in Smokers.

So, if you are worried and concerned, you need evaluation for the same. Regards
