Can Actalin Be Taken Along With Synthroid?

I take Synthroid, for 15 years. but, I am extremely tired all the time. Should I take Actalin along with the Synthroid? I am 84 years old. Appear younger and act younger, people think I am in my 60 s. But, if I would let myself, I could sleep all day. I don t have an Endocrinologist at this time. My TSH levels were check and came out good. I feel that I need to be checked further into the Thyroid. What do you think? GJ Jones

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is not advisable to take actalin while on synthyroid. Synthyroid alone is safe and effective for the treatment of hypothyroidism. Moreover, it is better tolerated, has a longer half-life, dosed once daily, and its response can be easily monitored by thyroid function tests.

Actalin which contains substantial amount of iodine can interfere with synthyroid, may aggravate symptoms of hypothyroidism and alter thyroid function test results hence it should be avoided.

I advise you to recheck the thyroid function tests and consult your doctor so that a dose adjustment of synthyroid could be done to achieve the target range of TSH within 0.3 to 3 mIU/L.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
